World Press Photo

World Press Photo is an independent non-profit organisation, founded in the Netherlands in 1955. Its main mission is to promote professional press photography and the free exchange of information. Besides the extensive exhibition program, the organisation runs several educational projects. Canon is a world-leader in imaging with famous brand such as EOS and IXUS. In the area of Single Lens Reflex cameras, Canon is the technology leader with products such as the EOS 450D and the EOS-1Ds Mark III for ultimate performance.

Canon and World Press Photo

Canon has been a major partner of World Press Photo for sixteen years. The key aim of the sponsorship is to provide high level support to the intrepid and often heroic profession of photojournalism. World Press Photo promotes the professional standards in photography; organises the largest international contest for professional photojournalists and acts as a worldwide platform for press photography. Synonymous with excellence in photojournalism, Canon is the brand of choice with the major photo agencies: Reuters, Getty Images and EPA all specify Canon digital SLR cameras for their field photographers.

The exhibition

Each year World Press Photo invites press photographers worldwide to participate in the World Press Photo contest. First, second and third prizes are awarded by an independent international jury in ten categories, for picture stories as well as single images. The prizewinning pictures selected by the international jury appear in the yearbook and a traveling exhibition. In the 2008 contest, 80,536 pictures were submitted by 5,019 photographers from 125 countries. The World Press Photo of the Year 2007 was awarded to the UK photographer Tim Hetherington. In 2008, the exhibition is expected to travel to some 100 cities in 50 different countries, attracting over two million visitors.
