New light-weight Canon CR-2 digital retinal camera improves patient comfort and operator efficiency

Canon CR-2 non-mydriatic digital retinal camera London, September 1, 2010 — Canon Europe, world-leader in imaging solutions, has launched the Canon CR-2 non-mydriatic digital retinal camera for medical institutions in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

The CR-2 incorporates Canon EOS digital SLR technology, with its renowned image processing capabilities, which has been enhanced to create a unique 15.1-megapixel digital camera dedicated to retinal imaging. This unique technology has been specifically adapted for capturing, documenting and depicting the ocular fundus.   A single sensor handles all functions for infrared observation, color fundus photography, and digital filtered images for red-free and cobalt photography.

The retina is the only place in the human body where blood vessels can be directly observed. Retinal imaging supports the early detection of glaucoma and other ocular disorders, as well as conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

The improved ergonomic design of the Canon CR-2 has resulted in a small and light-weight instrument that is intuitive, safe and comfortable to use. The illuminated control panel can easily be operated in darkened rooms and, weighing only 15 kilograms, is a flexible and easily transportable solution.

The latest in LED technology, coupled with the high sensitivity of the digital camera sensor, delivers greater patient comfort. White LEDs have replaced the strobe tube in the new automatic exposure flash light, reducing the chance of seeing an after image. This in turn improves reliability and removes the need to retake images due to incorrect flash exposure, leading to faster screening.

The advanced digital filter technology featured in the Canon CR-2 means that the images obtained are now comparable in quality to those achieved with optical filters. Another feature that contributes to faster screening and less inconvenience for patients is the new Anterior Photography mode. This new mode uses an additional compensator lens that makes anterior segment photography a quick and easy procedure.

The Canon CR-2 comes with the latest version of the Retinal Imaging Control Software suite (RICS) that supports Windows 7 and the export of data. Collecting, processing, archiving and referencing data has been made easier whilst RGB images or line drawings of current C/D ratios can be stored easily alongside patient name, patient ID, accession number, right/left eye, photographic mode and date of examination.

The Canon CR-2 will be available in the EMEA region during the fourth quarter of 2010.

The Canon CR-2 will be on display at the ESCRS Congress exhibition in Paris, France, 3-7 September 2010, stand  number 220/level 2.
