London, October 26, 2011 – Canon Europe, world-leader in imaging solutions has been selected to provide a comprehensive portable Digital Radiography (DR) system to meet the specialist requirements of the Universitäts-Kinderspital beider, Basel (UKBB), a University Hospital which is a centre of excellence for paediatric medicine.

The new Canon wireless DR system, installed at the new site of the UKBB hospital, provides access to flexible medical imaging equipment that delivers both high-quality images and dramatically improved workflows. Canon’s low dose DR technology also ensures that patients receive significantly reduced X-ray exposure, which is a particular benefit for young patients. The complete solution includes a number of Canon CXDI-70C devices, portable wireless detectors which can be attached to a mobile unit and moved around easily. Unlike traditional DR solutions, which are limited to one dedicated radiography room, these can be used all over the hospital, thereby reducing cost and eliminating the need for a fixed detector in every room. The installation of Canon’s CXDI Control Software NE ensures that machines are automatically recognised upon entering different treatment rooms and can be quickly and easily transferred when and where they are most needed, without wasting valuable, and sometimes critical, time re-booting. The new DR system was installed by Leuag, Canon’s distribution partner in Switzerland for medical imaging.
Dr. Jacques Schneider, Chief Physician of Radiology at the UKBB said: “Here at the UKBB our priority is to provide the highest quality of care to over 80,000 infants and young adults every year. The DR solution from Canon best meets the needs of our hospital and its patients by allowing us to review x-rays within a few seconds and move devices quickly and easily to where they are needed, often urgently.” Mr. Gregor Baggio, Sales Manager of Leuag, Canon’s distribution partner for medical solutions in Switzerland, commented: “Leuag’s DR Concept uses Canon’s products to give hospitals the flexibility to think beyond one room when installing DR devices. When designing the concept for the UKBB, the objective was to provide a solution that would meet the specialist needs of the paediatric hospital, and we achieved this primarily thanks to Canon’s innovative medical imaging solutions.” Peter Blonk, Director of Canon Europe’s Medical Systems Division, said: “Canon has been an innovator in medical imaging technology for over 70 years and we are continually investing in research and development to support the specific needs of medical professionals. We’re proud to see Canon technology being used to improve the daily lives of patients and medical staff in a well-recognised centre of excellence for paediatric medicine.”
