Swiss hospital chooses portable digital radiography solution from Canon

A University hospital that is a centre of excellence for paediatric medicine in Switzerland, Universitäts-Kinderspital beider Basel (UKBB), has implemented a comprehensive portable Digital Radiography (DR) system from Canon, to meet the specialist clinical requirements at its new site in Basel. The new system provides access to flexible medical imaging equipment that delivers both high-quality images and dramatically improved workflows. The low dose DR technology also ensures that patients receive significantly reduced X-ray exposure, which is of particular benefit for the young patients under the care of the UKBB.

Synopsis

Following consultation with Swiss dealer Leuag, the UKBB opted to install Canon’s wireless digital radiography system which includes a combination of Canon’s wireless and portable detectors and Canon’s CXDI Control Software NE. The flexibility of Canon’s solution allows medical professionals to effectively care for the 84,600 children and adolescents it treats as patients every year, without having to dedicate every detector  to a specific room. The UKBB has six Canon Digital Radiography devices that cover the whole of the hospital; including five CXDI-70C Wireless devices and one wired portable CXDI-60C unit.

This combination was specifically designed for the UKBB by Leuag to allow medical professionals to have the flexibility to treat the maximum amount of patients possible, without being limited by the capabilities of standard, fixed digital radiography units or the requirement to provide a dedicated detector in every location where images are taken.

The inclusion of the portable CXDI-60C unit within the solution means that medical staff can access the market’s smallest and lightest portable device to treat patients. This unit weighs 2.5 kg and is fixed in one room but is incredibly lightweight and portable. Medical staff have found they can quickly and easily treat patients with inaccessible injuries on the feet or back. The five CXDI-70C Wireless devices were incorporated into the solution because of the flexibility the device provides; should the wireless connection be lost, the unit automatically reconnects preventing vital data loss. The unit can also function within a standard size existing Bucky tray1, which sits under the radiographic table, and doesn’t have sensor cables, offering unparalleled operability as well as delivering high quality images. The large imaging area of the device and high resolution of 125 micron pixels means that medical staff can X-ray large areas of a patient easily.

The solution installed at the UKBB includes Canon’s CXDI software system, meaning the devices are interchangeable throughout the hospital. When treating immobile patients, members of staff are able to easily move a CXDI-70C Wireless unit to where it’s needed, reducing patient waiting time and improving workflows for medical staff. When moving the lightweight 3.4 kg unit into a different treatment room, medical staff do not need to reboot the system or reinstall the device; once the DR system is installed at the hospital and the devices installed on the network, the units are automatically recognised by a check-in unit upon entering a treatment room.

Dr. Jacques Schneider, Chief Physician of Radiology, explains: “Here at the UKBB our priority is providing the highest quality care to our patients. We often need to move devices quickly and easily and the value of not needing to reboot cannot be underestimated. This flexible solution has saved us vital minutes and seconds, something that is of the upmost importance when dealing with sometimes critically ill patients. The era of our medical staff being limited by the location or availability of devices is over for us – all of our energy can now go into providing world class care to our patients.”

As a long-standing partner of Canon, and Canon’s exclusive medical solutions partner in Switzerland, Leuag now maintains the UKBB’s DR solution that it designed and installed. Leuag’s Sales Manager, Mr. Gregor Baggio, says: “Leuag’s DR Concept uses Canon’s product range to give hospitals the flexibility to think beyond one room when installing DR devices. When designing the concept for the UKBB, the goal was to provide a solution that would meet the unique needs of this paediatric hospital, a goal we feel we achieved primarily thanks to the innovative and versatile medical imaging solutions provided by Canon.”

Peter Blonk, Sales/Marketing/Service Director of the Medical Systems Division, said: “Canon has been an innovator in medical imaging technology for over 70 years and we are continually innovating in response to the specific needs of medical professionals.  We’re delighted to see that our unique technology is being used to improve the daily lives of the medical staff and patients at the UKBB.”
