Configuring a wireless system seems difficult. Is this camera hard to set up?

Setting up the Digital IXUS WIRELESS is quick and straightforward. The supplied Wireless Print Adapter is already registered with the camera – simply attach it to your PictBridge printer to start printing wirelessly. For connection to computer, the Canon Camera Wireless Setup software (supplied on CD) automatically detects your computer's wireless settings and registers them with the camera via USB.

Do I need to buy any extra accessories to use the wireless features of the Digital IXUS WIRELESS?

No. Everything you need for wireless computer connection and wireless direct printing to PictBridge compatible printers is included in the box. Your PC must be running Windows XP SP2 or Macintosh OS X v10.4 and must be Wi-Fi enabled or connected to a wireless access point. Macintosh users will also need to download free software and firmware updates (See "Which computer operating systems are compatible with the Digital IXUS WIRELESS?" below).

Can I print wirelessly to all brands of PictBridge compatible printers?

Wireless direct printing is possible with the entire range of Canon PictBridge compatible printers, including the SELPHY CP and PIXMA inkjet models. Wireless direct printing is also possible with PictBridge compatible printers from other manufacturers.

Can I connect multiple computers and printers to the Digital IXUS WIRELESS?

Yes – up to 8 devices can be registered for wireless connection to the Digital IXUS WIRELESS. You use the camera's wireless menu to switch connections between registered devices.

Can I transfer wirelessly to computers in both ad-hoc mode and infrastructure mode?

Yes, the camera can be configured to transfer directly to the computer (ad-hoc mode) or via a wireless network's wireless access point (infrastructure mode).

I am concerned about Wi-Fi security. Can anyone eavesdrop on my communications?

To protect your data during wireless transmissions, the Digital IXUS WIRELESS uses a highly secure communication system incorporating WEP64/128-bit encryption and WPA-PSK (TKIP/AES).

 Top

Which wireless communication standard does the Digital IXUS WIRELESS use?

The Digital IXUS WIRELESS uses IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi CERTIFIED(TM)), a widely used Wi-Fi specification for home network devices.

 Top

Do I need a line of sight to transmit wirelessly?

No. Wi-Fi does not require a line of sight for communication, so you can print or transfer images just as easily from a separate room, provided it is within range.

 Top

How long does it take to transmit an image?

The t ransmission time is about 6 seconds for a standard sized image of 5 Megapixels (approximate file size 1.4 MB).

 Top

What is the transmission range?

The Digital IXUS WIRELESS has an effective range of approximately 30 metres. As with all Wi-Fi devices, environmental factors – such as walls and obstructions – can affect the transmission distance.

 Top

Can I print from a computer via the Wireless Print Adapter?

No. The Wireless Print Adapter is designed solely for direct printing from the Digital IXUS WIRELESS to PictBridge compatible printers.

 Top

Which computer operating systems are compatible with the Digital IXUS WIRELESS?

The Digital IXUS WIRELESS supports wireless communication to computers running Windows XP SP2 and Macintosh OS X v10.4.

Wi-Fi support for Macintosh OS X v10.4 requires two separate downloads:
Click here to download the camera firmware update.
Click here to download the ImageBrowser Wireless Updater software.

A full range of Canon features are available through a normal USB connection to computers running Windows 98SE/ME/2000 SP4/XP SP1-2 and Macintosh OS X v10.2 - 10.4.

Can I print wirelessly from the Digital IXUS WIRELESS direct to the PIXMA iP4000R?

The Wi-Fi functionality of the PIXMA iP4000R is not compatible with the Digital IXUS WIRELESS. You can, however, perform wireless direct printing by simply plugging the Wireless Print Adapter into the printer’s PictBridge port.

Why do I need to use the Compact Power Adapter with the Wireless Print Adapter for printers other than the SELPHY CP510/710?

The Wireless Print Adapter is powered by the USB bus power systems of the SELPHY CP510/710. For printers without a USB bus power system (or an incompatible system), the Wireless Print Adapter may require power via the supplied Compact Power Adapter. Since some other printers have bus powered USB connections, it may not be necessary to use the Compact Power Adapter. However, we do not support or guarantee this.

Why did Canon use the IEEE 802.11b specification instead of IEEE 802.11g?

We are offering the convenience of the wireless system to as many users as possible. Considering many factors, including power consumption, file size and camera size, IEEE 802.11b is the most appropriate standard to use.

 Top

Can I transfer images wirelessly between two Digital IXUS WIRELESS cameras?

Yes. To use the new Wireless Camera to Camera Communication feature both cameras must be updated with the latest firmware, available here.
