FAQ: Why do I get "Errorcode 38" in the device manger when I connect my camera or scanner?

Helpful Information:

When you connect your Camera/Scanner to the PC with Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional, no connection might be possible, in Device Manager you will see an "!" by the Canon Camera/Scanner or the Camera/Scanner might be listed as "Unknown Device".

When doubleclicking on the Camera/Scanner the Error message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)" is mentioned in the Status area.

Solution:


This behavior occurs because the Windows XP system Usbscan.sys driver cannot be used simultaneously by more than one device.

To work around this issue, connect and use one device at a time. To use the second device, disconnect the first device from the USB port, restart the computer, and then connect the second device.
To use the first device, disconnect the second device from the USB port, restart the computer, and then connect the first device.
