Winning image
Samuel Aranda’s winning image shows a woman holding a wounded relative in her arms inside a mosque used as a field hospital by demonstrators against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, during clashes in Sanaa, Yemen, on 15 October 2011.
Samuel was working in Yemen on assignment for The New York Times when the image was captured, which will now see him receive the prestigious World Press Photo of the Year 2011 award.
Alongside the award, Samuel will also receive €10,000 and a Canon EOS DSLR body and lens kit. The first prize winners in each category will receive a cash prize of €1,500. First, second and third prizes in all categories will also receive yearbooks featuring personalised covers that are printed on our Large Format Printers.
