With 8.2 Megapixel resolution, the EOS 30D's CMOS sensor records each image with enough clarity for detailed A3+ enlargements and creative cropping.

Canon's CMOS sensor technology offers several advantages over traditional CCD sensors. Low-noise performance means that even at high ISO speeds resolution and quality are not compromised. On-chip circuitry reduces remaining fixed pattern and random noise to enable shooting at speeds as high as ISO 3200 (equivalent). A low-pass filter in front of the sensor suppresses the false colour and moiré that can affect high-resolution digital photography.

Large pixels on the EOS 30D's CMOS sensor allow for a wide dynamic range, so that images retain greater contrast and detail in shadow and highlight areas. The 22.5 x 15mm sensor size adds an effective 1.6x increase to the focal length of EF lenses, for extended reach on telephoto shots.
