Knight – one of the world’s most influential fashion photographers, responsible for campaigns for Christian Dior, Swarovski, and Calvin Klein – shot stills for the film on a specially constructed circular rig that held 30 individual EOS 5D cameras, all fitted with Canon EF 24-105mm lenses.
Built by industry experts Glassworks, the six metre diameter rig allowed Knight to employ the ‘time-slice’ technique, with all 30 cameras centrally angled on the subject and triggered simultaneously. The images were then sequenced, processed and mingled with a range of abstract floral motifs. The film is soundtracked by a poem composed specially by London poet Roddy Lumsden.
“With this shoot, I wanted to create a new way of looking at the season’s designs,” said Nick Knight. “Many of the pieces had a strong floral influence, and this provided the inspiration for the film. It’s heavily abstracted, but retains a very organic feel.”
“Working with the rig was a new experience for me, and it’s one I’d love to repeat,” he added. “The Canon EOS 5D is just a very good camera. The speed, the accuracy and the consistency are superb; it creates large, beautiful images to work with.”
“The EOS 5D was the natural choice for this shoot,” said Hector Macleod, founder of Glassworks. “As well as being fantastically responsive, it’s really tough and resilient.”
