Each of the four winners – Dave Derbis from Germany (Landscape), Ivan Hoo from the UK (Portrait), France’s Alain Laboile (Macro), and David Bernard of the Czech Republic (Sport) – will embark on a Dream Assignment, specially created for them by Canon. On assignment, they will explore and test the EOS system, using an EOS 450D and a selection of lenses that is part of their prize. Their adventures will be filmed and broadcast across Europe later in the year in a series of television spots.
“First, our final four’s photographs were chosen from over 40,000 images originally submitted to The Assignment. Then, they went head-to-head against other country winners in the grand finale held in Vienna. Today, all four can feel justifiably proud of their achievements in coming so far,” said Gregory Kukolj, Marketing and Communications Director for Canon Europe. ”We sincerely hope that Dave, Ivan, Alain and David enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime assignments they are about to undertake.”
’Landscape’ winner: Dave Derbis
The first to follow his Dream Assignment, 26-year old German national Dave Derbis is being sent to the Reykjanes peninsula, a volcanic system that lies at the south western edge of Iceland. David’s assignment will combine his twin passions: photography and trial biking in the mountains. Travelling by bike, Dave is tasked with capturing the stunning volcanoes, lava fields and sulphur springs of this otherworldly ‘fire and ice’ terrain. He will test his new Canon EOS 450D to the limit, using a long-range EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM zoom and the lightweight EF 17-40mm f/4L USM.
’Portrait’ winner: Ivan Hoo
Ivan Hoo, a 22-year old Cambridge University student, harbours dual ambitions in the fields of science and fashion photography. His assignment will take him on a glamorous trip through London Fashion week (15-19 September), where he will document the experiences of an up-and-coming designer. Shooting on his new EOS 450D, Ivan will have at his disposal the ultra wide-angle zoom Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens as well as the professional lightweight zoom, the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM.
’Macro’ winner: Alain Laboile
Sculptor and father of five, 40-year old Frenchman Alain Laboile specialises in macro photography and would love to travel to a rainforest to photograph the flora and fauna from high in the forest’s canopy. Granting Alain his wish, he will fly to the Kakamega Rainforest, Kenya, home to approximately 160 species of tree and shrub as well as 370 types of bird. Amid this teeming wildlife, Alain will also have a chance to encounter Goliath Beetles, monkeys, leopards and other animals. Using his EOS 450D, Alain’s kit will consist of the high performance telephoto zoom EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM.
’Sport’ winner: David Bernard
For three years, 28-year old David Bernard from the Czech Republic has dreamed of being a professional photographer. This part-time fireman is fascinated by under-represented sports, so David is being sent to Iceland to cover one of the world’s strangest sporting events, the Swamp Football European Cup. Armed with his new EOS 450D, David will primarily be shooting using a long-range Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM zoom lens – the choice of the professionals.
Documentaries featuring Dave, Ivan, Alain and David will be available after each Dream Assignment has been completed.
