Canon’s toner cartridge recycling programme reaches 25 year milestone

LONDON, 25 March 2015 – Canon Europe, leader in imaging solutions, is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its laser toner cartridge recycling programme. The programme is available for genuine Canon toner cartridges and is designed to minimise the use of resources whilst enabling customers to meet their printing requirements.

Canon’s cartridges are designed with recycling in mind; HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) plastic can be recycled multiple times and still achieve a quality level equivalent to new. Thanks to a combination of reusing parts, recycling materials and energy recovery, no waste from Canon toner cartridges is sent to landfill through this programme. Cartridges returned by customers in Europe are sent to Canon Bretagne SAS in France and then undergo a closed loop recycling process to become new cartridges.

Canon was the first company to introduce a toner cartridge recycling programme in 1990. Now, the programme, which is free for customers, operates in 24 countries globally, of which 18 countries are in Europe.

Up to the end of December 2014, Canon’s programme had collected approximately 344,000 tonnes of used toner cartridges, avoiding the need for around 232,000 tonnes of new raw materials and saving about 502,000 tonnes of CO₂. Canon’s corporate philosophy is Kyosei – meaning living and working together for the common good. The focus on collecting and recycling toner cartridges forms part of Canon’s environmental vision and commitment to the circular economy – by enabling customers to benefit from technology for a lower environmental impact. In this case, this is achieved by reducing waste and reusing resources.

Customers can find out how to recycle their cartridges with Canon by visiting Canon’s recycling website. For outstanding results, Canon recommends use of genuine cartridges. More information about Canon’s recycling programme can be found on the 25th anniversary recycling website.
