Canon celebrates most successful drupa ever as customers are inspired to unleash print

LONDON, 22 June 2016 - Canon Europe – world leader in imaging solutions – has had its most successful drupa ever in terms of customer engagement, investment and interest. Indicating PSPs’ readiness to take advantage of the productivity, quality and flexibility that digital printing technology can now deliver, new and existing customers streamed onto the Canon stand at drupa 2016 to be inspired to diversify and extend their capabilities. As a result, sales of Canon’s continuous feed inkjet presses and its wide format printers were double those of drupa 2012.

Jeppe Frandsen, Executive Vice President, Canon Europe, comments: “Canon went to drupa 2016 with the aim of demonstrating the range and depth of our capabilities in a way that reflected the real business of our customers. We set out to give visitors fresh ideas about how they could expand their capabilities and to inspire them to unleash print in their own individual ways.

“We’ve surpassed that objective on every level. The response to what we showed on the Canon stand and to how we approached visitors at drupa has been hugely positive. Reflecting a growing optimism in the future of the industry, thousands wanted to find out more about how we can help them deliver business growth and transform their businesses, and investments by customers were up over 30 per cent overall on drupa 2012.”

Reaction to Canon’s market-leading range of advanced digital printing solutions exceeded all expectations, with increased interest from Eastern Europe, Turkey, Latin America and Asia. Sales of the Canon imagePRESS range of toner production presses were strong; 25% of orders came from customers new to Canon, while more than half of sales to established customers were motivated by the need to add new capacity and capability to their business. Canon’s flagship imagePRESS C10000VP was also named “Best cut sheet colour A3+ printer over 200,000 prints A4/month” in the EDP (European Digital Press) Association Awards presented at the show.

Remarking on the success of the imagePRESS at drupa, Mark Lawn, Director of Professional Print, Canon Europe, says: “We’ve been championing the enhanced performance of the newest additions to the imagePRESS range and many customers responded at drupa by upgrading their existing machines. More exciting still was the number of new customers who decided to invest in Canon toner technology for the first time. Word of the exceptional quality, productivity, consistency and media handling of the imagePRESS is hitting home and the positive reaction indicates that toner technology will continue to play an important role for PSPs for the foreseeable future.”

Recognising the ability of Canon’s high specification presses to deliver on the promise of inkjet now, customers made significant investments in continuous feed presses, such as the new Océ ColorStream 6000 Chroma and the Océ ImageStream 2400 , which is optimised for printing on standard offset media. The ground-breaking Océ VarioPrint i300 cutsheet inkjet press, with its new ColorGrip option also enabling the reproduction of high quality colour on standard offset media, proved popular too. Appreciating the ability of the press to deliver the productivity and quality of inkjet and the versatility and flexibility of a high-end, sheet-fed printer, customers from Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Turkey, the UK and the USA placed orders for the press. Canon also received excellent feedback from customers concerning Voyager , its prototype, seven-colour B2+ perfecting inkjet photo press.

Across our inkjet and toner portfolios, we’ve shown technology innovations that deliver significantly enhanced quality, media versatility and productivity to our customers. This means that our customers have massively increased their digital capacity and the scope of work they can produce digitally, especially with the increasing migration of volume from offset production.

“Inkjet has certainly come of age at drupa 2016 across the full spectrum of applications and is the printing technology of the future,” continues Wolff. “At previous shows, conversations centred on when the technology would be mature enough for PSPs to take advantage of its flexibility and migrate print volumes from offset to digital. Now inkjet’s ability to deliver real business value is no longer in question and, in terms of productivity, quality, cost efficiency and media versatility, it can compete with offset in many applications. Printers are convinced by what our technology can do today and have decided that now is the right time to invest with Canon, the global leader in continuous feed inkjet.”
