Customers embrace Océ VarioPrint i300 for cut-sheet inkjet production of graphic arts applications

LONDON – 3rd August 2016 - With the debut of the new ColorGrip option for the Océ VarioPrint i300 cut-sheet inkjet press, Canon Europe, world leader in imaging solutions, is reshaping expectations of the print quality achievable with inkjet technology for demanding graphic arts applications such as books, magazines and catalogues.

Canon Product Manager for VarioPrint i300, Walter Young comments: “PSPs who see the output from the VarioPrint i300 close up are blown away by the quality being delivered from a cut-sheet inkjet press. With the addition of ColorGrip, the device is now capable of producing outstanding graphic arts work like books and magazines, while still offering a productive solution for high quality direct marketing materials.

“Many of our customers didn’t believe that inkjet was right for their applications until they saw the press in action. Even people who have previously been sceptical towards inkjet can now see this output quality as a true alternative to offset for similar applications, but with all of the added advantages of high-speed inkjet production with integrated finishing.”

drupa 2016 marked the first public presentation of the VarioPrint i300 press to an international audience, following its introduction in selected geographical markets since Spring 2015. Thirteen customers immediately placed orders for the press, extending the installed base of the ground-breaking technology into new geographies and to businesses producing high-quality graphic arts work.

For German direct marketing specialist Borek Media GmbH, the VarioPrint i300 is the company’s first inkjet investment. Owner, Henning Borek, said: “When we visited drupa four years ago, inkjet technology had not yet reached a level of quality where we felt it would meet our customers’ requirements. When we first saw the new Océ VarioPrint i300 early in 2015, it became clear that inkjet was the future direction for us. A year later, having had closer dialogue both with our customers to determine how it can add value for them and with Canon to understand how we can work with the new press to develop our business, the time is right for us to take this step.”

Among the additional VarioPrint i300 orders received during drupa was the first from Turkey, from Uzun Dijital Matbaa in Ankara. An order from Norwegian customer LOS will also result in the first installation in the Nordic region. Customers from the Netherlands and Germany, already the most successful markets for the VarioPrint i300 to date, ordered a further six presses, while Signature Gifts became the second UK customer to opt for the press.

The VarioPrint i300’s suitability for high quality colour book printing is reflected in the order from Signature Gifts in the UK, who plan to use the press to produce personalised children’s books. Co-owner, Kevin Spindler, observed: “The VarioPrint i300 is made for our business – it offers high speed and high quality and, given that every unit we produce is unique, a short production run is vital. With Canon we get leading innovation from a proven supplier, and we’re excited to see the new opportunities that will come from it.”

Canon’s Senior Director for Commercial Printers & Production CRD, Peter Wolff comments: “When we introduced VarioPrint i300 early in 2015, we knew that the mixed media sheet-fed inkjet press was a ground-breaking concept that would carve out its own category in the market and many customers are already reaping the business benefits of being early adopters.

“With the introduction of ColorGrip, further development of the inkset and two new finishing options for bookletmaking and dynamic perforating, we are able to show print service providers that inkjet has truly arrived and is ready today to tackle offset head on for a vast range of high quality commercial print products.”
