Canon reports growing confidence in inkjet and high interest in digital sheetfed solutions following Hunkeler Innovationdays 2017

London, 4 April 2017 – Canon Europe welcomed more visitors than ever before to its stand at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2017 (Messe Lucerne, 20-23 February 2017), representing a broader range of print service providers (PSPs), and demonstrating a wider perspective on how to take advantage of digital technology innovation to evolve their businesses.

Canon Europe showed a range of flagship production products, including the newly launched Océ ProStream continuous feed inkjet press, the Océ VarioPrint i300 sheetfed inkjet press, and the imagePRESS C10000VP toner production press. This broad technology portfolio attracted a diverse mix of PSPs, including the traditional audience of web printers, as well as a growing delegation of sheet-fed commercial printers seeking new solutions for digital production.

Reflecting on the event, Peter Wolff, Senior Director, Customer Group Commercial Printer and Production CRD, Canon Europe, comments: “We have never experienced a busier Hunkeler Innovationdays and naturally we expected the launch of the Océ ProStream to be a major attraction. In fact all three presses received a lot of attention from visitors, who were drawn to the innovation and performance features that have made Canon the market leader* in continuous feed inkjet, sheetfed inkjet and digital colour production.”

He continues: “It’s clear from the evolving audience profile that interest in inkjet technology as a production solution is growing beyond the conventional core of those producing transactional and high-volume direct mail. It now embraces a far wider range of print businesses and applications. From our conversations on the stand, we can see that PSPs’ reservations about inkjet quality as a barrier to adoption are diminishing, and the premium quality of the printed output from the ProStream and VarioPrint i300 gives them the tangible evidence they are looking for. Consequently, discussions quickly progress to potential business models and PSPs are gaining a deeper understanding of how inkjet can fit into a blended production environment alongside other technologies.”

On the first day of the event, Canon reported the sales of the first four Océ ProStream presses to customers in Europe, including: Ipskamp Printing B.V., Enschede, Netherlands; Direct Mail House AG, St. Gallen, Switzerland; Daten-Partner GmbH, Erkrath, Germany; and Totem, Inowroclaw, Poland.

The Océ VarioPrint i300, first launched at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2015, also attracted high levels of interest, with new orders announced during the show from Lavauzelle Graphic in Panazol, France, and Jordi AG in Belp, Switzerland. These customers join the growing worldwide community of print service providers benefiting from the blend of high productivity, quality and applications versatility the VarioPrint i300 offers.

Peter Wolff adds: “While Hunkeler Innovationdays built its reputation as a web printing event, it was apparent from the buzz around the VarioPrint i300 that visitors are placing increasing value on the potential for cutsheet production presses to expand their capabilities and give them the flexibility to meet their customer’s changing needs.

“We also decided to exhibit a flagship imagePRESS C10000VP toner production press for the first time at this event. We showed visitors a broad variety of applications on diverse substrates, emphasising high-quality colour printing with active register and gloss optimisation, as well as showcasing the machine’s outstanding media handling capabilities. The active interest from visitors was striking, proving that PSPs of all kinds are inspired by the possibilities and are thinking laterally to transform their businesses. We can see this mindset in our customer base; for example, looking at the orders for the VarioPrint i300 to date, more than half have been sold together with a new imagePRESS toner device, or to complement an existing one.”

At Hunkeler Innovationdays 2017, inspiration took the form of an integrated promotional campaign for premium men’s clothing brand Hackett, illustrating how Canon’s range of digital production solutions could support a data-driven brand engagement campaign for a luxury brand, delivering the requisite level of quality across multiple formats and applications, while taking full advantage of variable content capabilities to drive response through successive consumer touchpoints.

Finished applications including books, photobooks, catalogues, brochures, self-mailers and newspapers were produced onsite at Hunkeler Innovationdays 2017 in collaboration with several partners, using live printed output from the Canon presses at the event, as well as pre-printed material from Océ ColorStream 6000 and Océ ImageStream continuous feed inkjet presses.
