Capturing 'smiling souls' and the power of silence

Born in Lisbon, Portugal; Nelson Lourenço is an amateur photographer while holding a Masters in Engineering and a post-graduate in marketing. Photography is something he was always interested in and became a passion when a friend let Nelson use her Canon Camera for a weekend - the first click was literally enough. With that first clumsy shot, he understood a whole new world was to be discovered.

Why do you love photography?

“Photography allows me to show the world the way I see it. When I pick up my camera I search for the ‘soul’ of things… but souls are shy and you must find a way to let them smile. Everything is easier with a smile. When I get that moment, then I know I have a great photo. Being able to express myself that way, allows me to feel free.”

What inspires you to take the pictures that you have chosen?

“There is actually one thing common to all of them: the wait. I usually wander around looking for some kind of mood that strikes me. When I find the place, I spend whatever time it takes to watch people around until I feel like one of them. Then I wait. When everything comes together, I shoot.”

How do you create a mood with your photos?

“I understand mood as the ability to evoke certain feelings or vibes in the ones that look at an image I have created. For that to happen you need to have elements that guide you through a story within the photo itself. I could say that one of the ways I try to do that is by incorporating the human element whenever I can, even if in the background. I also pay special attention to the light and use it to put the focus on the main characters.”

If you could capture a moment in time, what would it be and why?

“The silence. That moment when someone is isolated from the world, even if in the middle of a crowd. Inside that silence you might find fear, joy, tears, hope or even just an absurd emptiness. That’s the silence I’ve been trying to capture. Understanding other’s silence, makes us richer as human beings.”
