Experimenting with light is another great way to alter an image. Christian has discovered a time of day that he’s coined “the blue hour”, just after the golden hour of sunset, where “you get the perfect tone of blue”.
Have you experienced the blue hour before? Setting a colder white balance, such as daylight (as opposed to a shady or cloudy white balance), will work well to accentuate and capture the blue hue – which could create new and dramatic finishes to your stories.
Night shoots are ideal for experimenting with different lighting techniques and styles. A simple handheld torch is easy to transport and allows for unlimited creative compositions, such as uplifting from below or behind to light up the flower’s veins.
Christian suggests lowering the aperture to f/16 - f/12, “especially in close-up shots” to allow for more detail. If you’ve not played with the manual functions of your camera, night shoots are the perfect time to start.
Experimenting with lighting techniques and shooting in a new environment are enough to see striking results. Christian notes, “you don’t have to capture the most exotic flower to create something amazing”. Remember, this process aims to draw out the natural beauty.
So, start small and capture one flower at a time. Play with your camera settings and try different lenses too. Remember to keep a record of how each change affects the final image.
If you’re looking to highlight one flower then a good tip is to prepare a portable black background to help isolate them. A sturdy tripod will strengthen your use of angles too.
Christian says that his “tripod, combined with [his] Canon camera creates a sharp, clear and captivating image which truly demonstrates the natural beauty we’re surrounded by.”
