Spring forward with dynamic and expressive photos

With the winter months behind us, spring is full of promise. This season brings with it new waves of life. As the days get longer, buds on trees begin to emerge, flowers start to bloom and the lambing season begins. There’s a sense of optimism and the world starts to feel as if it’s full of natural energy.

Spring is about more than the weather, though. It’s also a time when people start coming together again, often around notable calendar events such as Easter and Mother’s Day, which is celebrated on different days in countries around Europe. This feeling of buoyancy and the promise of good things to come makes it the perfect opportunity to think about how you capture the charisma and charm of your subjects. Here are some ways to help you bring out plenty of personality in your photos.

Posing the natural way

Not all posed photographs need to look fake. You can ask someone to hold up one of their favourite items and talk about it or give them something you know they will love to engage with. This will help to make them more animated and allow them to ‘come to life’ naturally in front of the camera, so you can capture all the best aspects of their personality.

Catch the perfect moment

If you’re a keen photographer your camera will probably never be far away from you. And that means you’ll always be ready to capture that special moment. With a high shutter speed you are ready for the moment when a child bursts into laughter or friends exchange a memory that puts a smile on their faces. Be there with your camera and you’ll find their emotions come through naturally.

Animal magic

Springtime animals are full of life. Bringing out their sweet and sometimes cheeky nature will enhance your image and lift it from just another animal photograph to one brimming with personality. Outdoors, look for lambs, squirrels and ducklings to capture. At home, get ready to show off your furry friend’s loveable traits and fill your photos with that ‘ahhh’ factor.

More than just the subject

From exuberant children to the wisdom of the elderly, great images should show off the personality of an individual whilst also providing a context. Use the composition of your shot to help frame your chosen subject matter. You might want to show what’s making them so excited or thoughtful with objects in view behind them that add to the richness of the image. All of this will help you create an image with personality.
