FAQ: How to connect the machine to the computer(USB /wireless LAN)

Details:


When using the machine over a wireless connection, the following devices are required.

(A)Access point or wireless router
(B)Wireless LAN setup cable:The supplied wireless LAN setup cable is temporarily required for wireless setup.


NOTE
A commercial access point or router that supports IEEE802.11b/g/n is required.

USB Connection

  • This is the recommended installation when you use the machine on single computer, which is not networked.


Set Up a USB Connection (Software Installation)

Do not connect the USB cable yet.

To use the machine by connecting it to a computer, software including the drivers needs to be copied (installed) to the computer's hard disk. The installation process takes about 20 minutes. (The installation time varies depending on the computer environment or the number of application software to be installed.)


IMPORTANT
  • Quit all running applications before installation.
  • Log on as the administrator (or a member of the Administrators group).
  • Do not switch users during the installation process.
  • Internet connection may be required during the installation. Connection fees may apply. Consult the internet service provider.
  • It may be necessary to restart your computer during the installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions and do not remove the Setup CD-ROM during restarting. The installation resumes once your computer has restarted.
  • For the system requirements, refer to "Specifications".

Windows

  • If you connect the machine via USB cable before installing the software:


For Windows 7
(1) Remove the USB cable connected to your computer.
(2) Proceed to 1.

For Windows Vista/Windows XP
This dialog box may appear.
(1) Remove the USB cable connected to your computer.
If the dialog box closes, proceed to 1.
(2) Click Cancel.
(3) Proceed to 1.

  • Easy-WebPrint EX

Easy-WebPrint EX is Web print software that is installed on the computer when installing the supplied software. Internet Explorer 7 or later is required to use this software. An Internet connection is required for installation.

1.

Press the ON button (A) to TURN OFF THE MACHINE.
Operating noise may continue for up to 40 seconds until the machine turns off.


IMPORTANT
Do NOT connect the USB cable to the computer and the machine yet. If you have already connected the cable, disconnect it now.

2.

Turn on the computer, then insert the Setup CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
If you are using Windows, the setup program starts automatically.


NOTE
If the program does not start automatically, double-click the CD-ROM icon
in Computer or My Computer. When the CD-ROM contents appear,
double-click MSETUP4.EXE.

3.
Windows XP ->4

Click Run Msetup4.exe on the AutoPlay screen, then click Yes or Continue on the User Account Control dialog box.
If the User Account Control dialog box reappears in following steps, click Yes or Continue.

4.

Select your place of residence, then click Next.


NOTE
If the Select Language screen appears, select a language, then click Next.

5.

Select a country or region, then click Next.

6.

Click Easy Install.
The drivers, application software, and on-screen manuals are installed.


NOTE
If you want to select particular items to install, click Custom Install.

7.

Click Install.

8.

Select Use the printer via USB, then click Next.
Follow any on-screen instructions to proceed with the software installation.

Important Information for the Installation

  • USB Port


When the Printer Connection screen appears, connect the machine to the computer with a USB cable.
The USB Port is located on the right side of the machine.

NOTE
The supplied wireless LAN setup cable can be used as well.

  • Necessary Information for the User

Registration

When the serial number is not displayed on the registration screen automatically, input the serial number located inside the machine (as shown in the illustration).

IMPORTANT
If the power is on, the FINE Cartridge Holder will move when the Scanning Unit (Cover) (B) is opened.

  • If the Extended Survey Program screen appears


If you can agree to Extended Survey Program, click Agree.
If you click Do not agree, the Extended Survey Program will not be installed. (This has no effect on the machine's functionality.)

9.

Click Exit to complete the installation.
For Macintosh
It is necessary to restart the computer before scanning using the Operation Panel on the machine for the first time.

For Windows
Solution Menu EX starts.
For Macintosh
Solution Menu EX starts when clicking OK in the Canon Solution Menu EX dialog.
Remove the Setup CD-ROM and keep it in a safe place.


NOTE
The buttons displayed on Solution Menu EX may vary depending on the country or region of purchase.

Macintosh

1.

Select your place of residence, then click Next.


NOTE
If the Select Language screen appears, select a language, then click Next.

Click Easy Install.

Important Information for the Installation

  • USB Port

How to perform the setup using USB connection

Wireless Connection Connecting the Machine to the Network (Initial Setup)

  • This is the recommended installation when you use the machine on a computer connected to a network.


Set Up a Wireless Connection

Before connecting the machine to the network, make sure that the computer and access point or router is connected.

Add (connect) the machine to the network.

NOTE

An "Ad-hoc connection," which establishes a direct connection to the computer over a wireless connection without using an access point, is not supported. Be sure to prepare an access point.

- Notes on Wireless Connection

  • The configuration, router functions, setup procedures and security settings of the network device vary depending on your system environment. For details, refer to your device's instruction manual or contact its manufacturer.
  • In an office setup, consult your network administrator.
  • If you connect to a network that is not protected with security measures, there is a risk of disclosing data such as your personal information to a third party.
  • If an error message appears or if you have trouble with the network connection, refer to the printed manual: Network Setup Troubleshooting.
  • Place the machine and computer on the same network segment.

Software Installation

To use the machine by connecting it to a computer, software including the drivers needs to be copied (installed) to the computer's hard disk. The installation process takes about 20 minutes. (The installation time varies depending on the computer environment or the number of application software to be installed.)

IMPORTANT
  • Quit all running applications before installation.
  • Log on as the administrator (or a member of the Administrators group).
  • Do not switch users during the installation process.
  • Internet connection may be required during the installation. Connection fees may apply. Consult the internet service provider.
  • It may be necessary to restart your computer during the installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions and do not remove the Setup CD-ROM during restarting. The installation resumes once your computer has restarted.
  • If the firewall function of your security software is turned on, a warning message may appear that Canon software is attempting to access the network. If such a warning message appears, set the security software to always allow access.
  • For the system requirements, refer to "Specifications".

  • If you connect the machine via wireless LAN setup cable before installing the software:


For Windows 7
(1) Remove the wireless LAN setup cable connected to your computer.
(2) Proceed to 1.
For Windows Vista/Windows XP
This dialog box may appear.
(1) Remove the wireless LAN setup cable connected to your computer.
If the dialog box closes, proceed to 1.
(2) Click Cancel.
(3) Proceed to 1.

  • Easy-WebPrint EX

Easy-WebPrint EX is Web print software that is installed on the computer when installing the supplied software. Internet Explorer 7 or later is required to use this software. An Internet connection is required for installation.

When the Printer Detection screen appears, click Next.


IMPORTANT
  • If the Printer Connection screen appears instead of the screen above, the connection method is not correctly selected in 7.

Click Cancel and start again from 6, then be sure to select Use the printer on network in 7.

9.

Make sure the machine is turned on, then click OK.

10.

When the Set Up New Printer screen appears, click Next.


NOTE
If the Detected Printers List screen appears, click Set Up New Printer.

11.

When the Connect Cable screen appears, connect the machine to the computer with the wireless LAN setup cable.

12-A.

  • If the Detected Access Points List or Access Points screen appears

If the screen below does not appear, perform 12-B.

(1)Select the target access point name/network name (SSID).
(2)Enter the network key.
Enter upper and lower case letters of the alphabet correctly.
Letters are case sensitive.
To use WEP key number 2, 3 or 4, click WEP Key Number, then specify the WEP key number.
(3)Click Connect.
->Go to 13.

NOTE
  • If the target access point is not displayed on the Detected Access Points List or Access Points screen, refer to the printed manual: Network Setup Troubleshooting.
  • For details on how to check the access point name/network name (SSID) and network key, refer to the manual supplied with your access point or contact its manufacturer.

SSID
An identifier to identify the specific access point.
Network Key
Also referred to as encryption key, WEP key or WPA/WPA2 passphrase, Pre-Shared key.
A password required to set to prevent unauthorized access to communication.

12-B

  • If the Confirm Connection Access Point screen appears


(1)Make sure that the target access point is displayed, then click Yes.
If you are using Macintosh, a screen asking for permission to access the keychain appears. In this case, click Allow or Allow Once.
->Go to 13.

NOTE
If the target access point is not displayed in the above screen, click No, then perform 12-A.

13.

When the Disconnect Cable screen appears, remove the wireless LAN setup cable, then click Next.


NOTE
If the Automatic Setup or Auto Setup screen appears, click OK, then perform 12-A.

14.

When the Setup Completion screen appears, click Complete or OK.

Click Next.
Follow any on-screen instructions to proceed with the software installation.

Use from Additional Computers

If the machine is already connected to a wireless connection, it can be used from additional computers on the same network.

To use from additional computers
1. Insert the Setup CD-ROM into the computer from which you want to use the machine.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Other settings are not required.

How to perform the wireless LAN setup manually (Windows)

Make sure the machine is turned on, then click OK.

10.

When the Set Up New Printer screen appears, click Next.


NOTE
If the Detected Printers List screen appears, click Set Up New Printer.

11.

When the Connect Cable screen appears, connect the machine to the computer with the wireless LAN setup cable.
Follow the on-screen instructions and click Next.

12-A.

  • If the Detected Access Points List or Access Points screen appears

If the screen below does not appear, perform 12-B.

(1)Select the target access point name/network name (SSID).
(2)Enter the network key.

This section describes how to register the machine on a Macintosh computer.

NOTE
  • The alphanumeric characters after Canon MP495 series is the machine's Bonjour service name or MAC address.
  • If the machine has not been detected, make sure of the following.

- The machine is turned on.
- The firewall function of any security software is turned off.
- The computer is connected to the access point.

1.

When the Register Printer and Scanner screen appears, click Register Printer.
Mac OS X v.10.6.x ->Go to 2-A.
Mac OS X v.10.5.x ->Go to 2-A.
Mac OS X v.10.4.11 ->Go to 2-B.

Select Canon MP495 series canonijnetwork and click Add.

2-B.

When the Printer List window appears, click Add.


NOTE
When the You have no printers available. screen appears, click Add.

(2)

Click More Printers in the Printer Browser window.

(3)

Select Canon IJ Network in the pop-up menu, select Canon MP495 series in the list of printers, then click Add.

(4)

Make sure that Canon MP495 series is added to the list of printers.
-> Go to 3.

When the Register Printer and Scanner screen appears, click Register Scanner.

Select Canon MP495 series on the Scan-from-PC Settings screen, then click OK.

Click Next on the Register Printer and Scanner screen.

How to perform the wireless LAN setup manually (Macintosh)

  • If your access point or router supports WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup):

Wireless Setup Using WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)

Read this section only when setting up a wireless connection by using the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup).
  • For details on WPS, refer to the manual of your access point.


NOTE
For the setup procedure using the PIN code method, refer to "Setup Using PIN Code Method".

1.

When the access point is ready, press and hold the WPS button on the access point (for about 5 seconds).

2.

Press and hold the Maintenance button (A) (for about 3 seconds).
The LED (B) starts to flash.
The Wi-Fi lamp (blue) (C) flashes while searching for an access point.


IMPORTANT
  • If a timeout error (E > 2 > 1) appears in the LED, press the Color button, then start again from 1.
  • If another error appears, refer to the printed manual: Network Setup Troubleshooting.

3.

Make sure that 1 appears in the LED.

  • Setup Using PIN Code Method


(1)

Press the Maintenance button (A) 11 times. When the LED (B) lights up as shown in the illustration above, press the Color button (C). The Network Configuration Page including the PIN code will be printed.

(2)

Set the PIN code to the access point. For the procedure, refer to the manual of the access point.
When the access point is ready, press the Maintenance button 12 times. When the LED lights up as shown in the illustration above, press the Color button.


IMPORTANT
  • If a timeout error (E > 2 > 2) appears in the LED, press the Color button, then perform 2 again. As for the PIN code, use the same number as that in the Network Configuration Page printed in 1.
  • If another error appears, refer to the printed manual: Network Setup Troubleshooting.

Wireless Setup Using WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)

Read this section only when setting up a wireless connection by using the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup).

NOTE
For the setup procedure using the PIN code method, refer to "Setup Using PIN Code Method".

When the access point is ready, press and hold the WPS button on the access point (for about 5 seconds).

Press and hold the Maintenance button (A) (for about 3 seconds).
The LED (B) starts to flash.
The Wi-Fi lamp (blue) (C) flashes while searching for an access point.


IMPORTANT
  • If a timeout error (E > 2 > 1) appears in the LED, press the Color button, then start again from 1.
  • If another error appears, refer to the printed manual: Network Setup Troubleshooting.

Make sure that 1 appears in the LED.

  • Setup Using PIN Code Method

Press the Maintenance button (A) 11 times. When the LED (B) lights up as shown in the illustration above, press the Color button (C). The Network Configuration Page including the PIN code will be printed.

Set the PIN code to the access point. For the procedure, refer to the manual of the access point.
When the access point is ready, press the Maintenance button 12 times. When the LED lights up as shown in the illustration above, press the Color button.


IMPORTANT
  • If a timeout error (E > 2 > 2) appears in the LED, press the Color button, then perform 2 again. As for the PIN code, use the same number as that in the Network Configuration Page printed in 1.
  • If another error appears, refer to the printed manual: Network Setup Troubleshooting.

Software Installation

To use the machine by connecting it to a computer, software including the drivers needs to be copied (installed) to the computer's hard disk. The installation process takes about 20 minutes. (The installation time varies depending on the computer environment or the number of application software to be installed.)

IMPORTANT
  • Quit all running applications before installation.
  • Log on as the administrator (or a member of the Administrators group).
  • Do not switch users during the installation process.
  • Internet connection may be required during the installation. Connection fees may apply. Consult the internet service provider.
  • It may be necessary to restart your computer during the installation process. Follow the on-screen instructions and do not remove the Setup CD-ROM during restarting. The installation resumes once your computer has restarted.
  • If the firewall function of your security software is turned on, a warning message may appear that Canon software is attempting to access the network. If such a warning message appears, set the security software to always allow access.

Select your place of residence, then click Next.

Wireless LAN is enabled.
(4)

Press the Maintenance button 12 times. When the LED lights up as shown in the illustration above, press the Color button.

B. Setup on the Computer

From the Start menu, select Computer > Network.
For Windows Vista
From the Start menu, select Network.
(2)Click Add a wireless device on the menu.
(3)Select the machine, then click Next.

Enter the PIN code printed in A-2.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the settings on the computer. When complete, the LED lights up as shown in the illustration above.
Connection may fail depending on the access point or router. If an error that this machine is not detected or cannot be added appears, use the wireless LAN setup cable to connect to the wireless LAN.
