Canon’s positioning in Quocirca’s Sustainability Leaders Report
In this year’s report, Canon was recognised for its continued efforts to enhance the design of its portfolio and the way that it has brought in new approaches to support the circular economy and enhance carbon reduction. Quocirca also highlighted how, Canon has introduced a number of digital solutions that help its customers to optimise device usage, which allows it to support organisations with digitisation processes. The report also noted Canon’s approach to remote and smart services which reduces the need for in-person machine maintenance, minimising associated emissions, whilst supporting efficiency. Additionally, Canon’s outstanding awards for its sustainability efforts were noted which includes its EcoVadis Platinum Rating recognition, which was awarded in February 2025.
Quocirca also highlights the following initiatives which have helped Canon to enhance its sustainability positioning:
Mature remanufacturing strategy
Importantly, Canon’s remanufacturing strategy was cited in the report which details how its multifunction devices have been remanufactured since 1992. Canon currently remanufactures its flagship imageRUNNER ADVANCE ES range at its dedicated factory in Giessen, Germany, where it rebuilds devices using at least 90 percent reused parts. Canon also refurbishes multifunction devices for sale across Europe, through its Certified Used (CU) programme, which guarantees stringent levels of performance and reliability.
Leadership in circular economy practices
Quocirca notes Canon’s support for the circular economy, which forms a significant part of its sustainability strategy - with the organisation developing a business model that supports the creation and management of products in a circular way. Also highlighted is Canon’s commitment to recycling parts and hardware where possible for a second life and its use of durable materials to extend product lifecycles and help avoid replacing parts in its refurbishment and remanufacturing processes.
The report also notes that Canon continues to enhance its capabilities to expand its cartridge and print consumables collection, recycling and refilling programmes, developing initiatives to help ensure that resources are circulated, where possible, within the same region in which they are consumed.
Canon’s work with ClimatePartner was also highlighted - this important partnership has been in place since 2012 and helps customers take responsibility for GHG emissions by financing climate projects. The report also acknowledges Canon’s responsibly sourced, Zero Paper range, which is also certified by ClimatePartner and further supports customers with reducing their emissions.
Responsible manufacturing and logistics
Quocirca also notes Canon’s commitment to sustainable product design which focuses on creating energy efficient and long-lasting devices - and helping to reduce the impact of service and repair requirements. It also highlights how Canon helps to reduce waste through the reuse and recycling of parts and raw materials throughout its product lifecycles.
Additionally, the report notes Canon’s commitment to reducing the use of non-sustainable packaging by minimising plastics and using more recyclable cardboard packaging. It also recognises its logistics operations which introduced the container round use method, which helps to ensure that no empty containers are used during transport.
