London, UK, 5th October 2026 – Canon Europe today announces the first two installations of the Canon varioPRINT iX1700 sheetfed inkjet press in EMEA. Throughout July and August, the printer was installed at AC medienhaus in Germany and Bookadew in The Netherlands to boost production efficiencies, achieve consistently stable image quality, bring outsourced work in-house and expand application diversity.
The varioPRINT iX1700, a 170 A4 images per minute B3 sheetfed inkjet press, has been engineered for high productivity and consistent, high quality to meet the needs of commercial and in-house print service providers. The new press features a combination of new and proven Canon technologies, including high-definition 2400 x 1200 dpi printheads, a new set of water-based polymer pigment inks, automated printhead maintenance and quality control, and a straight paper path enabling the press to handle a wide variety of media. As a result, the press can produce a broad range of high-quality print jobs, including marketing collateral, books, book covers and premium direct mail.
The varioPRINT iX1700 was launched as an extension to Canon’s sheetfed inkjet portfolio to target print volumes between Canon’s toner-based flagship, the imagePRESS V1350, and the sheetfed inkjet varioPRINT iX2100/3200, above which, in terms of productivity and volume, now sits the varioPRESS iV7 B2 sheetfed press. Both customers already had Canon technology in their production line-ups, highlighting the complementary role the varioPRINT iX1700 plays within Canon’s broader toner and inkjet production print portfolio and the confidence customers place in Canon as a long-term technology partner.
AC medienhaus sets out to achieve more efficient production
AC medienhaus, part of the ACM Group, is a family-run printing house founded in Berlin in 1938. The company offers the full production chain, including data management, pre-press, print, finishing and global logistics.
As job lengths continuously shrink, AC medienhaus’ investment in the varioPRINT iX1700 is to support the company’s growth in digital print with an inkjet solution designed for more efficient production of general commercial print and publishing work for applications including books, brochures, training and educational materials, and personalised printed products. The press will also enable the company to bring outsourced print volumes in-house to better serve their customers.
AC medienhaus has been a customer since 2020, already operating colour imagePRESS C10010VP and mono varioPRINT 6000 toner printers in its print room.
Andreas Durst, CEO of AC medienhaus, says “For us, this investment marks a significant milestone in our company’s development and in digital print production. Our goal is to produce publishing and commercial print jobs more efficiently and to drive new growth. This new investment will support this goal and enable us to acquire new customers. Our choice to pick a Canon solution was a result of the trusted partnership we have with them, while our decision to invest specifically in the varioPRINT iX1700 was driven by workflow integration, quality, total cost of ownership and its fit within our existing product portfolio.”
Bookadew invests in productivity and consistently stable image quality
Bookadew is a specialist in the short-run production of case-bound hardcover and softcover books, working with a variety of publishers, associations, businesses and individuals. The key investment driver for Bookadew, part of ARS Print Media, was the ability of the varioPRINT iX1700 to produce high-quality A4 landscape sewn books cost-efficiently in short runs and ordered via its online portal.
During testing, the Bookadew team evaluated print quality, media compatibility, lamination and finishing requirements. The company selected the inkjet press particularly for its productivity, consistently stable image quality and application diversity. Beyond book production, Bookadew sees further opportunities in personalised packaging applications on heavier silk-coated media, for example, for its ‘Happibox’ employee gift boxes offering.
Thomas Martens, CEO, Bookadew explains; “At Bookadew, our focus is on producing high-quality books in short runs. During our evaluation, we were particularly impressed by the Canon varioPRINT iX1700’s combination of productivity, consistently stable image quality and media versatility. In addition to our varioPRINT iX3200, this press enables us to produce A4 landscape books more efficiently while maintaining the premium standards our customers require. In addition, it opens up opportunities to expand into new applications, including personalised packaging solutions. This investment strengthens our position as a specialist in on-demand book production and supports our future growth ambitions.”
Jennifer Kolloczek, Senior Director, Marketing & Innovation, Production Printing, Canon EMEA, comments: “The production print market is evolving rapidly, with shorter runs, greater demands for responsiveness and a growing need for more flexible production. Building on the success of our established varioPRINT iX3200, the varioPRINT iX1700 expands our sheetfed inkjet portfolio to customers with lower production volumes, helping more print businesses benefit from the efficiency and growth opportunities inkjet can offer.
“What is particularly encouraging is that AC medienhaus and Bookadew are using the iX1700 to address different business priorities – from improving efficiency and bringing more work in-house to expanding into new applications. That reflects how we see our role at Canon: not simply bringing new technology to market but helping customers make the right production choices for where they want to take their businesses next. I’m delighted to see AC medienhaus and Bookadew take this next step and look forward to seeing how they build on it in the months and years ahead.”
